Lamin Swann died on Sunday (May 14), just days after being admitted to the hospital for a medical emergency, according to his mother.

Swann, a Democrat from Lexington, had a “major medical issue” on Tuesday, according to his mother, Pamela Dixon, in a statement posted by the Kentucky House Democratic Caucus.

Dixon did not elaborate on the medical situation.

Swann was elected last year at the age of 45.

According to the General Assembly’s website, he served on the committees on transportation, health services, economic growth and workforce investment, elections, constitutional amendments, and intergovernmental issues.

Swann proposed and supported legislation to prevent discrimination in Section 8 housing awards, to safeguard abortion access, and to repeal the Robert E. Lee Day state holiday.

Swann, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, first became interested in politics at the age of eight, when he joined his grandfather at the Kentucky State Capitol to advocate for Martin Luther King Jr. Day to be recognized as a holiday in Kentucky.

He attended Tates Creek High School and the University of Kentucky, where he majored in social work and wrote for the school newspaper.

Swann had cerebral palsy and openly shared his struggles with the disease.

Swann was admitted to the hospital on May 9, 2023, for an unidentified “medical emergency.”

Five days later, on May 14, he died at the age of 45.
