It was revealed that she had Alzheimer’s disease on October 8, 2020, with mild symptoms appearing at the time she retired.

Following the diagnosis, Hope lived at home with the help of her husband Roger and daughters. Eventually, she moved into a nursing home. She died at the age of 67, in a long-term care facility in Vancouver

“It’s been a heartbreaking journey,” Roger told Haysom and Jackson in 2020. “I mean, she’s still Deb. Still wonderful, loving, gorgeous. But she’s not the real Deb and she’s not with us anymore. And that’s breaking all our hearts.”

Condolences poured in for Hope on social media from former colleagues, who described her as a talented professional and inspiring mentor, as well as people she had interviewed, who remembered her warm personality and genuine interest in their stories.
