Who is Deborra Hope? Iconic and beloved BC news anchor dies at age 67

Deborra Jane Hope, CM was a Canadian journalist, anchor, and producer for Global’s Vancouver, British Columbia-based station CHAN-DT.

Deborra Hope passed away on May 15 2023. On October 8, 2020, it was revealed that she had Alzheimer’s disease, with mild symptoms appearing at the time she retired. She died at the age of 67, in a long-term care facility in Vancouver

“It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Deb Hope,” Global B.C. said in a statement. “She was one of the most iconic faces in B.C. for decades and will be deeply missed. We are thinking of her family and loved ones.”

Condolences poured in for Hope on social media from former colleagues, who described her as a talented professional and inspiring mentor, as well as people she had interviewed, who remembered her warm personality and genuine interest in their stories.

Deborra Hope worked for the station since 1981 when it was known as BCTV and was a CTV affiliate. Hope hosted the Early News at 5 p.m. and the ‘InSight’ segment of the News Hour at 6 p.m. until she announced her retirement in March 2014.

In June 2022, Hope was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to journalism as a reporter and anchor “and for her tireless involvement as a volunteer.”
