Who is Dame Rosie Horton? – Dame Rosemary Anne Horton, a New Zealand philanthropist born Rosemary Anne Moon, has died. Horton was born on March 25, 1940, and died in May 2023, at the age of 83.

The Breast Cancer Foundation issued a statement in memory of its patron, founding trustee, and former chairman, who died over the weekend in Auckland City Hospital.
Horton, 83, raised millions of dollars for a variety of organizations, many of which focused on children and women, and was named a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2011 for contributions to philanthropy.
She was a trustee and patron of the Starship Foundation, as well as the creator of Friends of Starship in Auckland, which Horton called “the love of my life.”

She was also a patron of the Gut Cancer Foundation and the Rautakauri Music Therapy Trust, among other organizations.
The National Business Review named Horton one of the top ten donors in New Zealand in 2016.
Horton had helped raise cash for life-saving equipment at Starship Children’s Hospital, including the country’s first pediatric bone marrow transplant center.
Horton received a Mayor’s Living Legend Award in 2008 and the Catherine Variety Sheridan Award from Variety (The Children’s Charity) in 2009 for her dedication to improving the lives of children in New Zealand.
Her husband, Michael Horton, of media conglomerate Wilson and Horton Ltd and former publisher of The New Zealand Herald, one daughter and two living step-children, as well as five “wonderful” grandchildren, survive her.
