Hodding Carter III was an American journalist and politician who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs under President Jimmy Carter

Hodding Carter III was the son of Hodding Carter and Betty Werlein Carter. His father William Hodding Carter II was a progressive author and journalist and his mother was a publisher, editor and writer.

His parents founded their own newspaper the Hammond Daily Courier which launched on April 18, 1932. William Hodding Carter II was a Nieman Fellow and a Pulitzer Prize winner, among other honours.

He died of a heart attack at the age of 65 in Greenville, Mississippi. He was laid to rest in the Greenville Cemetery.

Hodding Carter III died on May 11, 2023, at the age of 88, at a retirement home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from a series of strokes.

Catherine Carter Sullivan, his daughter, confirmed his death on Thursday, May 11 2023,  in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Hodding Carter III served as a spokesman for the US State Department during the Iran hostage crisis and later won awards for his televised documentaries.

He was the author of two books, “The Reagan Years” and “The South Strikes Back.”
