Nelson was raised in Devils Lake, North Dakota, and graduated from Devils Lake High School. As a freshman and sophomore, he largely played on the junior varsity team.
During his junior season, Nelson averaged 16.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.1 blocks per game and was awarded second-team All-State.
As a senior, he was crowned North Dakota Mr. Basketball after averaging 25 points, 18 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game.
