Peru “decided to agree to the request for temporary surrender … (of van der Sloot) … for his prosecution in the United States for the alleged commission of the crimes of extortion and fraud” against Holloway’s mother, Justice and Human Rights Minister Daniel Maurate Romero said in a statement Wednesday (May 10, 2023).

Van der Sloot will be returned to Peru after the legal proceedings against him in the United States are completed, according to Peru’s judiciary.

Joran van der Sloot, born on August 6, 1987, is a Netherlands convicted killer who murdered Stephany Flores Ramrez in Lima, Peru, in 2010.

Van der Sloot escaped to Chile following the murder of Flores on 30 May 2010 — five years to the day after Holloway’s abduction — and was captured and deported back to Peru for questioning about the murder.

On June 7, 2010, he admitted to bludgeoning Flores.

He later attempted to legally revoke his confession, claiming that the Peruvian police had intimidated him and that he had been framed by the FBI.

On June 25, 2010, a Peruvian judge concluded that the confession was legitimate, and on January 13, 2012, Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in jail for Flores’ murder.

In January 2023, an additional 18 years was added to his sentence for cocaine trafficking while incarcerated.
