An undercover film recorded by crime reporter Peter de Vries, which was shown on Dutch television on 3 February 2008, purported to show Van der Sloot using marijuana and admitting to being there during Holloway’s death. In the Netherlands, the show had 7 million viewers and was the most popular non-sports program in Dutch television history.

“I always lied to the police. I never told the truth,” van der Sloot said in a video posted by RadarOnline. “Also, when I was younger, I never told everything. The police just never knew what they had to ask me.”
The person recording the video then asks if he is referring to the Holloway case, to which he replies, “Yes, this is also where I am guilty and I accept everything that I have done.”

Patrick van der Eem, an undercover agent for De Vries, had befriended Van der Sloot, who was unaware that he was being recorded when he said that Holloway had experienced a seizure while having sex on the beach.
Van der Sloot stated that he summoned a friend named Daury after failing to revive her.
The two men did not call for medical assistance or check on Holloway to see if she was still alive.
According to Van der Sloot, Daury then volunteered to load her into a boat and dump Holloway’s body into the water.
The prosecutor in Aruba ruled that the video was acceptable, but that the evidence was “insufficient” to support any arrests.
Although the audio confession appeared to be incriminating, Van der Sloot claimed he was lying to impress Van der Eem, whom he suspected of being a heroin dealer.
