Van den Hurk’s stepbrother confessed to the murder in 2011 but was released a month due to a lack of substantial evidence.

Hurk’s stepbrother later admitted to falsely confessing to the murder in order to get his stepsister’s remains exhumed for DNA testing.

The fifteen-year-old began cycling towards Woensel shopping center, where she was working a vacation job, in the early morning of Friday, October 6, 1995, but did not arrive. At 18:00 that day, officers discovered her bicycle in the Dommel River.
