Holloway grew up in Mountain Brook, Alabama, and graduated from Mountain Brook High School just days before the trip on May 24, 2005.

Holloway was supposed to travel home from the Caribbean island on May 30, 2005, but she did not show up.

Her classmates last saw her outside of Carlos’n Charlie’s, an Oranjestad restaurant and nightclub.

What happened to Aruba killer?

Joran van der Sloot, the leading suspect in Holloway’s disappearance, is a convicted killer from the Netherlands who murdered Stephany Flores Ramrez in Lima, Peru, in 2010.

Van der Sloot escaped to Chile following the murder of Flores on 30 May 2010 — five years to the day after Holloway’s abduction — and was captured and deported back to Peru for questioning about the murder.

On June 7, 2010, he admitted to bludgeoning Flores.

He later attempted to legally revoke his confession, claiming that the Peruvian police had intimidated him and that he had been framed by the FBI.

On June 25, 2010, a Peruvian judge concluded that the confession was legitimate, and on January 13, 2012, Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in jail for Flores’ murder.

In January 2023, he was sentenced to an extra 18 years in jail for cocaine trafficking.

Holloway’s mother revealed in a statement on May 10, 2023, that Van der Sloot will be extradited to the United States.
