Arman Soldin was with a group of AFP journalists and Ukrainian soldiers near Chasiv Yar when the team came under fire around 4:30 p.m., according to the news agency.

According to four AFP coworkers who witnessed the attack, Soldin was killed when a Grad rocket landed near him. There were no other journalists injured.

“The whole agency is devastated by the loss of Arman,” AFP chairman Fabrice Fries said. “His death is a terrible reminder of the risks and dangers faced by journalists every day covering the conflict in Ukraine.”

Arman Soldin was one of the first AFP journalists dispatched to Ukraine on February 24, 2022, just one day after Russia invaded the country. He had been in the war-torn country since September, regularly travelling to the most combative zones to oversee the team’s coverage of the invasion, according to AFP.

The journalist was killed while reporting in a town near Bakhmut, which has become the epicentre of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, on Tuesday.

Soldin had been with AFP since 2015, when he began as an intern in the Rome bureau. He was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, and was also a French citizen.
