Dame Floella Benjamin was born in Pointe-à-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, on September 23, 1949.

Benjamin, 73, is well-known for hosting children’s shows such as Play School, Play Away, Jamboree, and Fast Forward.

She arrived in England as a Windrush child at the age of ten in 1960.

She dropped out of school at 16 with the intention of becoming Britain’s first black female bank manager, but instead became an actor, presenter, writer, independent producer, working peer, and an outspoken advocate for the welfare, care, and education of children all over the world.

In the 2001 New Year Honours, Benjamin was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to broadcasting.

She was the chairperson of the British Academy of Cinema and Television Arts at the time (BAFTA).

She has also received a BAFTA Special Lifetime Achievement Award.

She chaired the Women of the Year Lunch for five years and served as a Millennium Commissioner.

She is the president of the Elizabeth R Commonwealth Broadcasting Foundation and a member of the National Film and Television School’s governing board.

During Charles III and Camilla’s coronation on May 6, 2023, she carried the King’s sceptre, usually known as the Rod of Equality and Mercy, which reflects his spiritual role during the ceremony.
