Carey, who was born on January 10, 1959, co-wrote the teen novel Puberty Blues with Kathy Lette.

This was the first teenage novel written by teenagers to be published in Australia.

The book sparked debate because of its candid depictions of adolescent life in suburban southern Sydney at the time.

A film based on the novel was released in 1981, and a television series premiered in 2012.

Carey met Kathy Lette when she was 12 years old and they became best friends.

Carey had recently become a leading authority on the author James Joyce, as well as the host of Bloomsday events commemorating Joyce’s classic work, Ulysses.

Carey was a regular contributor to The Australian, among other publications, and was born in Sydney.

She also recently wrote about her father, Alex Carey’s, suicide.

Waiting Room, her second memoir, is about her mother, Joan, who died of cancer in 2009.

Moving Among Strangers, Carey’s family memoir, was a co-winner of the 2014 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for non-fiction.

Only Happiness Here, her 2020 book, was nominated for the prestigious 2021 Nib Literary Award.

Bridgette and Jimmy, her two children, survive her.
