Barbara Bryne was a British-American film, stage, and television actress. Barbara Bryne died on 2 May 2023, at the age of 94.

Barbara Bryne’s death was announced by the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. “Barbara was a cherished member of the Guthrie family,” theatre reps said in a statement, “and we’re grateful she shared her artistry with us for so many seasons. Her legacy will live on at the Guthrie and in our hearts forever.”

Bryne, who was born in London on April 1, 1929, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before taking on more than 30 roles at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, beginning in 1966.

Bryne appeared as the nosy neighbour Mrs Gaffey in the 1981-83 NBC sitcom Love, Sidney, starring Tony Randall, and as the gnome Urgl in the 1995-96 HBO animated series The Neverending Story.

She appeared on Broadway in comedic, dramatic, and musical productions and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA).

Her film credits include appearances in Milos Forman’s Amadeus (as Mozart’s mother-in-law) and James Ivory’s The Bostonians, both of which were released in 1984.

Susan, her daughter, is among the survivors. Denny Spence, her husband of 65 years, died in January 2018 at the age of 88.
