David “Dave” Hakstol is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and the current head coach of the National Hockey League’s Seattle Kraken (NHL). Hakstol has also coached at the Sioux City Musketeers, the Philadelphia Flyers and Canada’s national men’s team.

Hakstol attended the University of North Dakota and played hockey there from 1989 to 1992.

Hakstol returned to his alma mater, North Dakota, as an assistant coach in 2000. In 2004, he was named head coach.

Hakstol was only 35 years old when he was named UND coach. On July 9, 2004, he was named UND hockey coach, becoming only the 15th head men’s hockey coach in school history and the program’s fourth head coach in the previous 44 years.

During his tenure as head coach, Hakstol took North Dakota to the NCAA Frozen Four seven times.

In 2009 and 2015, Hakstol was named conference coach of the year, and he was a finalist for national coach of the year eight times.
