He was born on July 7, 1987, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan to Darrin S. Crowder and Francine Crowder.

His mother was French Canadian, and when he was three years old, his family relocated to the Montreal suburb of Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada, where he spent the rest of his childhood.

Steven Crowder attended Centennial Regional High School before returning to the United States at the age of 18. Crowder attended Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont for two semesters.
