She caused one of the most racially motivated deaths in the history of black people in America.

Carolyn accused young black teenager Emmett Till of ‘sexually’ abusing her at a grocery shop which led to his brutal death.

Till was accused of making inappropriate comments and grabbing her at the shop. A few days later, Till was abducted at gunpoint by two white men from his home.

He was severely beaten and dragged to the bank of a river and shot in the head. Till’s body was tied in barbed wires to a heavy metal fan before being dumped into the river. His corpse was completely disfigured when they pulled it out of the river.

Roy Bryant, Carolyn’s husband, and brother-in-law, JW Milam were later charged with regard to the kidnap of Till in an arrest that took place in 1955. They were both acquitted of murder by an all-White jury following the trial in which Carolyn testified that Till grabbed and verbally threatened her.

Carolyn was never charged even though Roy and Milam confessed in an interview years after that they kidnapped and killed Till.

A member of the Black Lawyers for Justice, Malik Shabazz shared how unjust the system has been against black folks in this case.

Carolyn Bryant’s death brings a conclusion to a painful chapter for the Emmett Till family and for Black people in America. The tragic part about Bryant’s death was that she was never held accountable for her role in the death of young Emmett Till, who is the martyr for the Civil Rights Movement,” he said.
