Springer died at his home in Chicago, Illinois on April 27, 2023, at the age of 79. Though a cause of death was not immediately revealed, a family spokesperson said he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months prior.

The Jerry Springer Show premiered on September 30, 1991. It was taped in Chicago, Illinois from 1991 to 2009 and in Stamford, Connecticut, from 2009 to 2018.

However, NBCUniversal ended production of new episodes of the show after 27 seasons on June 13, 2018. The show’s final tapings took place on July 6, 2018, and its final episode aired on July 26, 2018, with reruns continuing on The CW immediately thereafter.

It’s not exactly known why NBCUniversal ended production of the controversial yet well watched show.

Despite the show coming to an end, NBC executives wanted to keep him signed on and convinced him to take a chance on a slightly different type of programme.

Springer decided to preside over a courtroom in his new show, Judge Jerry, where he wore black robes to look at small claims court cases that had already been filed in jurisdictions across the United States.

This was to prevent litigants from purposely seeking out the show to earn 15 minutes of fame, which was a big problem during his former show.
