Skinner played major junior hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League.
The Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Skinner became the sixth goaltender in WHL history and the only one in the history of the team to score an empty-net goal against the Medicine Hat Tigers on March 18, 2016.
A third round selection, 78th overall, in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Oilers, Skinner was later signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on May 14, 2018.

Skinner, who was in the last year of his entry-level contract, started the pandemic-delayed 2020–21 season with the Oilers.
Through the first nine games, Skinner backed up Mikko Koskinen for the Oilers due to an injury to seasoned player Mike Smith.
On January 31, 2021, Skinner made his NHL debut and first career start against the Ottawa Senators, earning his first victory in an 8-5 triumph.
Skinner split the 2021/22 seasons between the NHL and AHL.
In a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks on February 14, 2022, Skinner achieved his first NHL shutout by making 20 saves.
