Glenn Greenwald and his husband David Miranda have two adopted children; two brothers. Greenwald and Miranda announced in 2017 that they had gained legal guardianship of the two brothers, who are from Maceió, a city in Northeastern Brazil. The couple formally adopted the two boys in Brazil in 2018.

Greenwald and Miranda met in 2005 during the former’s long vacation to Rio de Janeiro. At the time they met, Miranda was 19 years.

The connection between Miranda and Greenwald was near-instant as they decided to move in together just days after they met each other. They eventually got married in 2005, the same year they met.

In 2016, Miranda and his friend Marielle Franco, were elected as the first LGBT councillors in Rio’s history.

Miranda focuses primarily on the issues of the LGBT community and other marginalized segments of the Rio population.

Greenwald and Miranda were close personal friends of Brazilian human rights advocate and politician Marielle Franco, known for criticism of police tactics and corruption, who was fatally shot by unknown assailants.

Miranda and his family have travelled in a bulletproof car since Franco’s assassination in March 2018.
