During his college days, he played football in the Kanto University Soccer League with Tsukuba, and was named to the all-league XI.
Mitoma also played with the Japan under-23 national team at the 2017 and 2019 Universiade tournaments, the 2018 Asian Games and the 2019 Toulon Tournament.
Mitoma signed a contract with the Kawasaki Frontale in 2018, until 2021 when the Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion signed him into a four-year contract.
In the same year, the Union SG had loaned him for a season.
In 2022, Mitoma was named as part of Japan’s 26-man squad to represent the country at the FIFA World Cup.
