Marcus Smart played college basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 2012 to 2014. During his senior year in high school, Smart averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5 assists.

In his high school career, Marcus Smart achieved a record of 115–6 through three seasons and was a two-time 5A state champion. Smart became the first player in tournament history to record 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
