Ernie Barrett Cause of Death

Ernie Barrett, affectionately known as ‘Mr. K-State,’ with his trademark firm handshake, died on Friday, April 21 2023, at hospice care in Manhattan. He was 93 years old.

Ernie Barrett is survived by his 72-year-old wife, Bonnie, his son, Brad, a grandson, Ryan and his wife, Lauren. His parents and son Duane predeceased him.

Barrett was chosen by the Boston Celtics in the first round (7th overall) of the 1951 NBA Draft. He played 131 games for the Celtics (1953-54, 1955-56) in the National Basketball Association.

Ernie Barrett returned to Kansas State University in 1991 as the department’s director of development for which he served until his retirement in 2007.

The University released statements on the passing of Ernie Barrett: University President Dr. Richard Linton shared “Ernie Barrett has always been a shining example of what it means to be a K-Stater.”

“Ernie embodied the work ethic, dedication and tenacity that are hallmarks of the Wildcat spirit. We will always celebrate and hold dear the legacy of Mr K-State and all he accomplished for our great university.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 1 p.m. CT, followed by a reception in the Shamrock Zone. The service and reception are both open to the general public.
