Popular comedian and actor, Barry Humphries has been admitted to St. Vincent’s Hospital after suffering severe complications due to hip surgery.

Barry Humphries is currently in hospital receiving treatment for health issues. Barry would like to thank everybody for the support and good wishes he’s received but would like more and more. He would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital,” a statement by the family read.

He also shared a few words after he was out of danger.

It was the most ridiculous thing like all domestic incidents are. I was reaching for a book, my foot got caught on a rug of something, and down I went,” he shared.

Born on 17 February 1934, Barry Humphries started his career in the ’50s after he joined the Melbourne Theatre Company right after completing University. It was during that era that he created one of his most amazing characters, Edna Everage.

He moved to Sydney to join the Phillip Street Theatre in 1957 and made his first major appearance in a satirical revue, Two to One which also starred Max Oldaker.

In 1959, he moved to London and worked there throughout the 1960s. He gradually became friends with top leading members of the British Comedy Scene which included Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alana Benett, Jonathan Miller, and more.

Humphries also made several appearances in numerous stage play productions by West End including Oliver! and Maggie May musicals by Lionel Bart.

He moved back to Australia in the ’70s and made Edna Everage her movie debut in John B. Murray’s The Naked Bunyip. He has also appeared in many films since the late ’60s. Some of these movies include Bedazzled (1967), Percy’s Progress (1974), The Great Macarthy (1975), Barry’s Mackenzie Holds His Own (1974), Side by Side (1975), The Getting of Wisdom (1977), Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and more.

The comedian who is most notable for writing and playing his on-stage and television alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson.

In March 2012, Humphries announced his retirement from live entertainment, explaining that he was starting to “feel a bit senior.” He then announced his farewell tour titled Eat, Pray, Laugh which began in Canberra on 22 July 2022 and ended in Paris on 3 February 2013.
