He was born in November 1960. He once shared that he was influenced by C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, Lewis Carroll, Mary Shelley, Rudyard Kipling, and more.

At age 19, he got into contact with his favorite science fiction writer, R. A. Lafferty whom he first discovered when he was just 9 years old. Lafferty sent him an informative letter along with literacy advice.
According to him, he was mostly influenced by Roger Zelazny. In the early ’80s, he pursued journalist, conducted interviews, and wrote book reviews, so he can learn about the world and make connections so he can publish his own works someday.
Gaiman became friends with comic book writer, Alan Moore who also trained him on how to write comic scripts. He started writing his own comic books and picked up Miracleman after his dear friend finished his run on the series.
