Swiss Paralympian athlete, Marcel Hug was born with spina bifida, a form of spinal chord injuries. He developed interest in wheelchair racing at a very young age.

A sports teacher in his school bought his an old racing wheelchair when he was just 10 years old. He competed in his first race that same year and was part of the Schenkon Marathon which he won.
After his victory, he took wheelchair racing very serious and decided to pursue it as a career. He joined the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwi, and teamed up with his trainer Paul Odermatt.

Did Marcel Hug win the 2023 Boston Marathon?
Marcel Hug has won the men’s wheelchair race at the 2023 Boston Marathon, making in his sixth win in total. He took an early win from start to finish of the race. He built a two-minute gap between himself and the person behind him by the 10k mark and went ahead for over 3 minutes.
“I feel incredible. It was such a great race but also a difficult race in these conditions. To do this fast of a time on this course and these conditions, for me, it’s incredible,” he said.
“I just tried to go hard from the beginning, as hard as possible, and see what’s possible in these conditions. Next race is London Marathon next Sunday,” he added.
