Ahmad Jamal Cause of Death

Ahmad Jamal, a  highly acclaimed American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader passed away Sunday, April 16 2023, at the age of 92.

Jamal’s death was confirmed by his daughter, Sumayah Jamal. He died Sunday afternoon in Ashley Falls, Mass., after a battle with prostate cancer.

Jamal spent his entire life playing jazz, which he referred to as “American classical music,” in the house band for Chicago’s Pershing Hotel Lounge, where he recorded his 1958 breakthrough album, Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing: But Not For Me.

The album sold one million copies and stayed on the Billboard magazine charts for more than 100 weeks, making Jamal a household name at a time when rock’n’roll was on the rise and jazz was on the decline.

Jamal continued to perform relentlessly in the 1980s and 1990s, releasing several live albums and cementing his reputation as one of the best living jazz performers.

Ahmad Jamal’s influence and admiration were widespread in jazz. Miles Davis, for example, found great inspiration in Jamal’s work: in his 1989 autobiography, Miles stated that Jamal “knocked me out with his concept of space, his lightness of touch, his understatement, and the way he phrases notes, chords, and passages.”
