What happened to Lenny Bruce?

Lenny Bruce, the trailblazing comedian and social critic, had a tumultuous life and career that came to an abrupt and tragic end.

Tragically, Lenny Bruce died of a drug overdose just a few months later, on August 3, 1966, at the age of 40. Bruce was discovered in the bathroom of his Hollywood Hills.

The official photo taken at the scene showed him naked on the floor, with a syringe and a burned bottle cap nearby, as well as other drug paraphernalia.

Lenny Bruce’s friend, record producer Phil Spector, purchased the negatives of the photographs “to keep them from the press.” The official cause of death was “acute morphine poisoning caused by an overdose”

Since his death, Lenny Bruce has become a cultural icon, and his influence on comedy and popular culture continues to be felt.
