Born on August 17, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia, Farmer played baseball at Marist School in Atlanta, and college baseball at the University of Georgia (UGA).

While in college, he recorded a .308 batting average and a .968 fielding percentage, and also played summer baseball with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

In 2013, Farmer was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers as 244th overall pick, in the 8th round of the MLB draft, after he rejected his first contract offer with the New York Yankees the previous year.

In 2018, Farmer was traded by the Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds, and in 2022, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins.

In 2023, Farmer signed a one-year deal with the Twins worth $5.585 million.
