Bruce Petty, a well-known Australian animator, died at the age of 93 after a protracted illness. Petty was born in Melbourne and spent his childhood on a tiny farm in Doncaster.

He began his career as an orchardist before landing a job at the Owen brothers’ animation company in Box Hill when he was 19 years old. Petty’s first effort was authoring the narrative for the film Careful Koala, which aimed to raise children’s safety awareness and ignited his interest in animation.
Although Petty was more interested in humor than sketching, he attended night classes at RMIT and was introduced to the work of Polish illustrator Feliks Topolski, which impacted his distinct style.

Petty moved to London in 1954 after working in the art section of Melbourne’s Herald newspaper, where he worked in theatrical design and had his work published in the satirical magazine Punch.
He returned to Australia through New York, where he sold his writing to magazines such as The New Yorker and Esquire.
