Who is Newt Gingrich

American politician and author Newton Leroy Gingrich, who was born on June 17, 1943, is well-known for his contributions to the Republican Party in the country. Gingrich represented Georgia’s 6th congressional district in the House from 1979 until his resignation in 1999.

He was the 50th Speaker of the US House of Representatives. In addition, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican Party’s endorsement for President of the United States in 2012.

In the 1970s, Gingrich began his professional life as a history and geography professor at the University of West Georgia. He became the first Republican to win a seat in Georgia’s 6th congressional district when he won his first election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978.

He was a co-author and the chief architect of the “Contract with America,” a strategy that assisted Republicans in winning the 1994 legislative election, and he served as House Minority Whip from 1989 to 1995.

Gingrich was named “Man of the Year” by Time magazine in 1995 as a result of his leadership, which was instrumental in ending the four-decade Democratic dominance in the House.

Gingrich managed the approval of numerous key measures while serving as House Speaker, including welfare reform and a reduction in the capital gains tax in 1997.

His leadership was, however, also characterized by a number of government shutdowns and his choice to impeach President Bill Clinton in the House on a party-line vote.
