Family Dollar Stores, Inc. is an American company of variety of stores with approximately 8,000 locations in all states except Alaska and Hawaii. Leon Levine, a 21-year-old entrepreneur, launched the company in 1959 and built its first store in Charlotte, North Carolina.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company developed dramatically, with more outlets appearing across the southern United States. The corporation had 1,500 outlets open by 1989.

Initially, a family-owned business, Leon Levine created Family Dollar after studying the retail industry with his father. But in 2015, Dollar Tree Inc. bought Family Dollar and incorporated it into their business. Therefore, Dollar Tree Inc. currently owns Family Dollar.
