Blagojevich’s political career was marred by several controversies. Blagojevich was tried twice in federal court on corruption charges.
- Blagojevich faced criticism for his appointments to various state boards and commissions. He had a feud with his father-in-law and was involved in the Elevator Constructors Local 2 PAC.
- Blagojevich was the subject of at least a dozen separate federal investigations, involving accusations against at least 14 other people, including his former fundraiser Tony Rezko.
- Blagojevich was accused of creating a “pay-to-play” scheme in which he solicited donations of $25,000 or more from individuals or businesses who wanted access to him or state contracts.
- Blagojevich was accused of being lazy and spending little time on his official duties as governor. He earlier said in an interview that he was “blacker than Barack Obama” because he grew up in a poor neighborhood and shined shoes as a boy.
