Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM, a well-known Indigenous Australian campaigner, and figurehead in the Aboriginal community died on April 3, 2023.

He was a Yolngu man from the Gumatj tribe in Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, who devoted his life to defending Indigenous land rights. He was recognized as 1978 Australian of the Year and was a well-liked member of the Aboriginal community.
On June 30, 1948, Galarrwuy Yunupingu was born in Melville Bay, close to Yirrkala. His father, Mungurrawuy Yunupingu, was a renowned artist and the head of the Gumatj tribe. He was raised in a family of leaders and artists.

Nyapanyapa Yunupingu and Nancy Gaymala Yunupingu were two of Galarrwuy’s talented sisters, while his brother Mandawuy Yunupingu was the band Yothu Yindi’s lead singer.

Galarrwuy Yunupingu spent his formative years at the Mission School in Yirrkala. Then, he relocated to Brisbane to attend the Methodist Bible College for two years before coming back to Gove in 1967.
Galarrwuy and his father Mungurrawuy got involved in the fight for land rights at the beginning of the 1960s and contributed to the creation of the Yirrkala bark petitions.
These court actions by Indigenous Australians in Australia, which were represented by his father’s paintings, contested mining firms’ ability to use traditional lands. Galarrwuy was prominent in this case and garnered media attention.
