In 1955, Sandy Koufax joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. He struggled at first because his large signing bonus required him to spend his first two years in the Major Leagues rather than developing his skills in the Minor Leagues. He didn’t find his stride until 1961.

He then dominated Major League Baseball for a few years before injuries started to catch up with him. He pitched the first perfect game pitched by a left-handed pitcher since 1880 in 1965.

Sandy Koufax was an All-Star in each of his last six seasons, leading the National League (NL) in ERA four times, strikeouts four times, wins and shutouts three times each, and winning percentage, innings pitched, and complete games twice each.

He was the first NL pitcher in 20 years to post an ERA under 2.00 three times. After setting a modern NL record with 269 strikeouts in 1961, he became the first pitcher in 17 years, and the first left-handed pitcher since 1904, to strike out 300 batters in 1963.

After winning multiple Cy Young Awards and numerous other honours, he retired in 1966.
