Vivan Sundaram Obituary

On 29 March 2023, Vivan Sundaram passed away following complications of an intracerebral hemorrhage in New Delhi at the age of 79.

Vivan Sundaram was born to Kalyan Sundaram, Chairman of Law Commission of India (1968 – 1971), and Indira Sher-Gil, sister of noted Indian modern artist Amrita Sher-Gil.

Vivan Sundaram was married to art historian and critic Geeta Kapur. Vivan Sundaram was born on May 28, 1943, Shimla, India.

Vivan Sundaram was educated at The Doon School, where he briefly received instructions from Doon’s first art teacher and the Bengal School of Art painter, Sudhir Khastgir.

In 2016, Vivan Sundaram set up the Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation (SSAF) alongside his sister, the filmmaker, and television journalist Navina Sundaram. He was the managing trustee there.

Vivan Sundaram co-authored a project on the artist Ramkinkar Baij, “409 Ramkinkars” (2015), alongside theatre directors Anuradha Kapur and Santanu Bose.

Vivan Sundaram was one of 30 artists specially commissioned to make new work to mark the Sharjah Biennial’s 30th-anniversary edition.
