The most recent incident occurred on March 20, 2023, when a student fell from the fifth floor of the building. This was the second suicide involving the building in the spring 2023 semester.

This incident followed another student’s death on February 15, 2023. The first suicide happened in September 2017 when a student was found dead by suicide in the outside basement of Agnes Arnold Hall.
The Agnes Arnold Hall building features exterior hallways that are open-air and have balconies on the upper floors. Some students have called for the building to be torn down or modified to prevent further tragedies.

The University of Houston has temporarily closed the building and is considering its future use. UH President Renu Khator said they will sit down with students and faculty to determine what to do with the building.
The University of Houston has expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased students and offered support to the campus community. The university also held a vigil on March 24, 2023, to honor the lives of the students who passed away.
The university’s president, Renu Khator explained more in a series of tweets on Monday night:
Today is another very sad day for UH. We are all shaken by the deaths of two people on our campus this semester and are grieving as a community. We believe both took their own lives.
