Joe Giella was an American comic book artist best known for his work as a DC Comics inker during the late 1950s and early 1960s, which historians and fans refer to as the Silver Age of Comic Books. Joe Giella (June 27, 1928 – March 21, 2023) died at the age of 88. Giella’s lengthy and fruitful career has earned him the title of “one of the creators synonymous with the Silver Age of Comics”

Giella, who was born on June 27, 1928, was raised in Queens’ Astoria neighborhood and went to school in Manhattan at the School of Industrial Art. Together with future comics experts Joe Kubert and Mike Sekowsky, he attended the Art Students League in Manhattan to further his education. He also took commercial art courses at Hunter College.

Although Joe Giella was married, no information about his wife is currently known. Nevertheless, we’ll update this if we find out more. Giella inked Westerns penciled by Alex Toth (including the feature “Sierra Smith”) and Gene Colan during the superhero lull in the early 1950s (on the series Hopalong Cassidy, splitting the work with fellow inker Sy Barry).
