Kim Jong Il, sometimes known as Kim Chong Il, was a North Korean politician who succeeded his father Kim Il-Sung as the country’s leader (1994–2011). He was the son of the previous North Korean premier and (communist) Korean Workers’ Party (KWP) chairman Kim Il-Sung.

Kim held prominent positions on the Central Committee, in the Politburo, and in the Party Secretariat before being officially named his father’s successor in October 1980. He was granted leadership of the military forces in 1990–1991 and kept these positions for a number of years. Kim Jong Il took over as de facto leader of North Korea after Kim Il-Sung passed away in 1994 from a heart attack.
