He completed his high school education at The Patrick School in Hillsdale, New Jersey.

After high school, Nowell committed to play collegiate basketball for Little Rock, over offers from Minnesota, Georgetown, Rutgers, Seton Hall, VCU and Western Kentucky, and others.

Following a three-year stint with Little Rock, Nowell transferred to Kansas State for the 2021-22 season with 2 seasons of eligibility remaining.
