Antonina Uccello was an American politician who was Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, from 1967 to 1971.

Antonina “Ann” Uccello died of natural causes Sunday, March 12 2023, at a hospital in Hartford

Ann Uccello was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on May 19, 1922, to parents who had emigrated from Sicily. After graduating from high school and then a private Roman Catholic college, she did graduate work at Trinity College in Hartford and the University of Connecticut Law School.

She defeated incumbent Mayor George Kinsella in the 1967 election becoming the first woman mayor in Connecticut.  She was re-elected two years later.

Tributes from state political leaders poured in Tuesday, March 14 2023, afternoon as word of Uccello’s passing began circulating.

“Ann Uccello was a pioneer,” Bysiewicz said. “I admired her groundbreaking work as mayor of Hartford, and one of the highest-ranking women in the Nixon administration. She leaves a legacy that has and will continue to inspire generations of women to pursue careers in politics and public service.”
