All Quiet on the Western Front is not based on a true story. However, the film is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s book, which was published in Germany during the inter-war period in 1929.
The movie is set during World War I and follows the life of Paul Bäumer, an idealistic young German soldier. Bäumer finds himself exposed to the realities of war after enlisting in the German Army with his friends, shattering his early hopes of becoming a hero as he does his best to survive.

All Quiet on the Western Front received a record 14 nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards (winning seven, including Best Film).
The film also had nine nominations at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and won four awards, including the Academy Awards for Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.
