Chael Patrick Sonnen was born on April 3, 1977, in West Linn, Oregon, United States of America. Chael Sonnen attended West Linn High School, where he was a state runner-up.
After high school, Chael Sonnen attended Brigham Young University before transferring to the University of Oregon in Eugene.
While at Oregon, Chael Sonnen earned All-American honours, was a two-time PAC-10 runner-up, and was a silver medalist at the 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championships. He was also a two-time Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman winner.
Chael Sonnen graduated from the University of Oregon in 2001, with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology.
