Chael Patrick Sonnen was born on April 3, 1977, in West Linn, Oregon, United States of America. Chael Sonnen began his mixed martial arts career in 1997 at the age of 19, by defeating Ben Hailey in Vancouver, Washington.

Chael Sonnen won his first six fights when he began his mixed martial arts career before losing to Trevor Prangley.

At UFC 98 in May 2009, Chael Sonnen defeated Dan Miller via unanimous decision. Chael Sonnen faced Quinton Jackson for the Bellator Heavyweight World Grand Prix Tournament on January 20, 2018, at Bellator 192 and won the fight via unanimous decision.
