Gerry McNamara was a guard for Bishop Hannan High School, where he was a three-time Associated Press Pennsylvania Small School All-State First Team selection.

He was also named AP Pennsylvania State Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012. McNamara attended Syracuse University and won the school’s first National Championship in his first year.

In 2005, he briefly represented the United States in an international competition, winning a Gold Medal at the Summer Universiade. McNamara was the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA draught, but he did not sign and went undrafted.

He went on to play in Green, Latvia, and the NBA Developmental League. On September 4, 2006, he signed a one-year contract with Olympiacos BC, but only for Euroleague games in 2006-07.

He was paid $90,000 for that one minute after playing only 30 seconds in the team’s first five games.

In 2009, he returned to Syracuse as a graduate student and served as the basketball team’s graduate manager. In 2011, McNamara was promoted to Syracuse’s assistant coach.
