Two people were confirmed dead after a stampede at a rap concert in Rochester, New York, which authorities believe was sparked by unfounded fears of gunfire.

Memphis rap stars GloRilla and Finesse2tymes had finished performing at Rochester’s Main Street Armory on Sunday, March 5 2023, when something prompted people to rush dangerously towards the exits shortly after 11 p.m., according to Police Chief David M. Smith at a news conference Monday.
“We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or of anyone being shot or stabbed at the scene,” Smith said.

Responding officers assisted medical personnel in providing care, and two people taken to a nearby hospital are “currently listed as critical, life-threatening,” according to a police statement to the media.
Six more people were dropped off at local hospitals by private vehicles with “non-life threatening injuries related to this same event,” according to the statement.
“The injuries appear to be as a result of a large crowd pushing towards the exits following accounts of individuals hearing what they believed to be gunshots,” the statement concluded.
