There are no founding members of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band who are still alive. The last founding member, Gary Rossington was reported dead by the band’s official Facebook page on March 5, 2023.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter, and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today. Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in Heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie, and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time,” the statement read.

No cause of death has been announced yet. He died at the age of 71.

The only know person who is also considered a member of the band and is still alive is the band’s ex-drummer, Artimus Pyle. He is currently 71 years old.

What happened to Artimus Pyle?

Artimus Pyle was sued by Gary Rossington for trying to make a film and capitalize on the band’s plane crash that took members of the band away. The documentary titled Street Survivors which was scheduled to release to portray what actually went on before, during, and after the crash was put on hold briefly. However, the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan overturned a previous injunction against the film.

“That crash is part of the history of the band, but it is also an ‘experience’ of Pyle with the band, likely his most important experience,” says part of the ruling.
