A cause of death has not been revealed. However, in September 2022, Wills was hospitalized in Toronto with a heart condition, which was diagnosed as supraventricular tachycardia, and missed the last two weeks of the Rays’ season.

He worked at the Tampa Bay Rays from 2005 until his death, alongside broadcast partner Andy Freed.

During Rays game broadcasts, Wills and Freed switched between play-by-play and colour commentary, usually every three innings.

Dave Wills signed several contract extensions with the Tampa Bay Rays Radio Network and another “multi-year” contract after the 2017 season.

Dave Wills’ final Rays game was a spring training game against the New York Yankees on March 4, 2023, the day before he died. Wills was inducted into the Irish-American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
