Gary Rossington died on 5 March 2023. His death was announced by the band announced on their official Facebook page Sunday evening.
Although no cause of death was given, Gary Rossington had been dealing with health issues for several decades, particularly since the mid-2010s, when heart problems occasionally sidelined Rossington and the band.
Gary Robert Rossington is best known as the founder of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1964, he and his friends formed the band The Noble Five as teenagers.
Since 1991, the band has released 14 studio albums and sold over 20 million albums. “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird” are their signature songs.

Gary Rossington and his wife Dale Krantz-Rossington had a side project called the Rossington Band, which released two albums. Rossington was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as a member of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Until his death in 2023, Rossington still played with Lynyrd Skynyrd. With the deaths of keyboardist Billy Powell (2009) and Larry Junstrom (2019), he was the last surviving original member of the band.
