Lord Farquaad is the short-in-stature, ruthless ruler of Duloc. Lord Maximus Farquaad is the main antagonist of the 2001 animated film Shrek, as well as Shrek 4-D and the musical.

Lord Farquaad does not appear in William Steig’s original picture book of the same name. In the films, Lord Farquaad orders all fairy tale creatures to be rounded up and sent to live in a designated area called “Shrek’s swamp.”

Lord Farquaad is obsessed with becoming a king and decides to marry Princess Fiona. He decides that Princess Fiona can be his perfect wife and queen, however, she is trapped in a tower guarded by a dragon. He organizes a tournament to find a brave knight who can rescue her and, ultimately, chooses Shrek to do the job.
